Internet Gambling. The Future
As we
all know the American law of October 2006 has restricted the payment
methods of the American residents to bet online. In fact the online
gambling has not been banned, but all the credit cards, banks and
financial institutions based in the U.S., can no longer process
payments related to the internet gambling.
This stance against the online gambling has caused a lot of
controversy, and an international lawsuit (Antigua) against the
United States for what they consider an illegal obstacle to free
trade.
In the European Union, there are no restrictions for online gambling
as long as the website and the software are located offshore. This is
outside the limits of the EU. Only in England is legal to install an
online casino and the regulation process is moving very fast in that
country.
Of course the legalization of the gambling online is not an easy task,
since in Europe, USA and most of the world there are monopolies,
either in casinos or lotteries.
Now. It is reasonable to ban the internet gambling?. There are all
sorts of arguments to condemn the online wagering, but from our point
of view they all seem quite weak and with little foundation.
The first argument is that computers are a doorway to the
indiscriminate access of people to the world of gambling. In some way
the Internet has facilitated the access of the masses to a number of
opportunities for knowledge, entertainment, trading and expression of
public opinion. There is virtually no activity that in some way does
not have online presence and the gambling can not remain detached from
this.
If you look impartially there are living millions of people in Las
Vegas or London, and this fact alone is not
a
particular motivation to
visit the casino every day or weekend. We do so, only if we want
to have
some fun and can afford
extra money to spend in this
entertainment. There are more
complex causes for which a person becomes addicted to gambling, drugs,
or food.
The issue is whether it makes sense to ban the internet gambling or
not.
We believe that online gambling is already a commercial and social
irreversible trend. Each month, millions of people spend a good time
betting online, in a much cheaper and accessible way than in the
traditional casinos in Las Vegas or Europe.
We understand that there should be strong regulations to prevent the
access of minors and addicts. For the rest you can not restrict the
access to an activity that does not impose obstacles in the
traditional versions.
